Lessons in solar technology

Here's your chance to sign up your local school to British Gas' £15 million mySolar School programme.

Last week saw the start of British Gas' mySolar School programme, which sees us investing in solar technology for Britain's schools. The £15 million programme is being fronted by Kate Garraway from Daybreak on ITV1, who is doing interviews on local radio and in the press.

We will donate and install solar panels worth between £20,000 and £40,000 in up to 750 schools. This will allow participating schools to generate their own electricity, which could cut as much as 20 per cent off their annual electricity bill.

The panels will also help the schools to meet their carbon reduction targets by up to 1,400 tonnes a year – equivalent to taking around 400 cars off the road. Each school will also get a LCD display, so pupils can see how much energy the solar panels are generating.

We have earmarked half of the total investment for schools in low income areas. We intend to deliver the technology to these schools in conjunction with the Government's Community Energy Savings Programme (CESP)

“This is the biggest investment of its kind in solar technology for our nation's schools, which will help them cut both their carbon emissions and their electricity bills – as well as learning about renewable energy in a hands-on way,” said Phil Bentley, managing director.

The electricity generated by the schools will help pay for the scheme to be extended to even more schools throughout the country. Great news for school leaders, parents and pupils who are all looking for ways to save money during these tough economic times.”
